Safeguarding museum collections: The conservation of easel paintings at the Pinacoteca di Brera

The seminar will present the main issues related with the preservation of paintings on panel and canvas. Based on the experience at the Pinacoteca di Brera the display conditions, the artefact storage and the conservation laboratory activities will be explained. Artworks materials and painting techniques, the decay phenomena, also related to changing in the climate conditions, and some conservative intervention techniques will be described. All topics will be also exemplified through some case studies on important restorations made on Italian Renaissance masterpieces: paintings by Raphael, Titian, Giovanni Bellini. The seminar is held in the framework of the Memorandum of Understanding on Cooperation between the Azerbaijan National Museum of Art and the Pinacoteca di Brera, signed on May 3, 2017.

Andrea Carini
Paintings conservator, Head of conservation at the Pinacoteca di Brera in Milan, Italy. After a MFA at the Academy of Fine Arts in Urbino and specialization at the Brera Academy of Fine Arts in Milan, he attended the painting conservation course and post-graduate course at the Istituto Superiore per la Conservazione ed il Restauro (ISCR), Italian Ministry of Cultural Heritage and Activities and Tourism, Rome.
His work is mainly focused on the restoration of ancient paintings, including artworks by Giotto, Andrea Mantegna, Giovanni Bellini, Raphael, Titian, Francesco Hayez and Pino Pascali. As researcher, he studied particularly art materials and techniques, application of advanced multispectral imaging and spectroscopy, whose results have been published and presented in scientific events. He taught restoration methodologies and techniques in several institutions, like Brera Academy of Fine Arts in Milan, Yachay Wasi Institute, Lima (Peru) and Istituto Superiore per la Conservazione ed il Restauro, Rome.
